The surgeon who helped separate a pair of twins will be hand this week in Santa Monica to talk about the experience.

The surgical separation of the conjoined Guatemalan twins will be the topic of the kick-off talk April 1 in Santa Monica College’s spring 2005 “Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series,” a free series of talks designed for lay audiences.

The lecture — being given as part of SMC’s Second Annual Embryology Symposium — will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 1 in science lecture hall 145, 1900 Pico Blvd. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The speaker will be Dr. Henry Kawamoto Jr., director of craniofacial surgery for UCLA’s Craniofacial Clinic and a UCLA clinical professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery. In the past 27 years, he has earned international respect from his peers for his surgical skill in reconstructing children’s faces after correcting disfiguring skull and facial defects caused by birth, disease or trauma.

Recently, Kawamoto received international attention for being part of the UCLA team that successfully separated twin Guatemalan girls who had been attached at the head.
