*Hit-and-run suspect leads LAPD on chase into Santa Monica*

BROADWAY — A woman suspected of fleeing the scene of an accident Tuesday morning slammed her car into an SUV and a stop sign before coming to a halt at a Santa Monica intersection.

The crash at Berkeley Street and Broadway occurred around 11:10 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Officer Karen Smith. The driver was taken into custody by LAPD officers on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

Paramedics took the injured driver to a local hospital, but her condition was not immediately known. The driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene, said Smith.

The motorist in question, whose name was not made available as of press time, was said to have fled the scene of an earlier accident at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Butler Avenue in West Los Angeles, where at least one victim complained of injuries.

Witnesses at the scene flagged down a police officer driving in an unmarked vehicle, who subsequently radioed for assistance as he followed the female motorist. The chase lasted for about a minute before the female motorist lost control and slammed into a black SUV, said Smith.

Santa Monica police responded to the scene of the second accident, at Berkeley Street and Broadway, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, adding that SMPD is only handling the investigation of the crash that occurred in Santa Monica. LAPD is conducting the investigation into the alleged hit-and-run.
