DOWNTOWN — Santa Monica police arrested four suspects late Monday night for possession of large quantities of cocaine and marijuana with the intent to sell.

More than four ounces of cocaine and three ounces of “high quality” marijuana were found, according to SMPD Capt. Alex Padilla, who said police also discovered an electronic scale and packaging material typically used for the sale of narcotics.

The names of the suspects were not released, as of Tuesday, because the case is still under investigation.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to the 1500 block of Sixth Street after fielding a citizen’s complaint about possible drug activity in the area.Once on the scene, officers surrounded two suspicious vehicles, from which they detained the four occupants.

All four smelled like marijuana and admitted to recently smoking pot in a nearby parking lot, police said.

Officers called in a K-9 unit to sniff for narcotics. The dog smelled the presence of narcotics and alerted the officers. The cocaine and marijuana was quickly recovered and the suspects arrested.

One of the suspects admitted to being a “marijuana connoisseur,”stating that he was not ill and did not possess a prescription for medical marijuana, but does obtain his pot from various cannabis collectives located in West Los Angeles and Hollywood, according to police.

The suspect said he had several friends who worked at cannabis collectives and they obtained the high quality marijuana for his recreational use.

Anyone with information regarding the arrest or other drug-related crimes is urged to contact the Narcotics/Vice Section of the SMPD at (310) 458- 8455\. Anonymous tips may be left at the SMPD narcotics tip line at (310)458-2292.
