On Sunday, January 16, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

While conducting a foot patrol in Parking Lot #1, located at 1550 Pacific Coast Highway officers observed individuals becoming verbally aggressive with Code Enforcement Officers assigned to educate vendors on local laws related to the Pier and surrounding beach areas. SMPD Officers approached the agitated crowd and observed a male, later identified as Israel Hernando, push another male causing the victim to lose his balance. Prior to being pushed, the victim placed himself between officers and the crowd in an attempt to calm the situation. Hernando was transported to the Santa Monica Jail and booked for battery.
