Nearly 100 people gathered at Santa Monica Beach this past weekend to walk for children’s rights.

The Southern California chapter of Child Relief and You America Inc. (CRY), conducted its countrywide annual fundraising event. It was the first event of its kind in Southern California, held at Crescent Bay Park in Santa Monica, which is among the six venues across the country where the walk was conducted this year.

Organizers say that half the children in India between the ages of 6-18 years do not go to school; half the children in India are malnourished and 17 million Indian children are child laborers. CRY America aims to build a community of volunteers who work towards a common goal: To give a child his or her right to a childhood.

The date of the walk was one of marked significance — Oct. 2, the birth date of Mahatma Gandhi. Against the azure blue backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, more than 78 participants walked two miles on Ocean Front Walk. Children were entertained at the kids craft booth, while their parents participated in the walk. At the end of the walk, participants relished samosas (spicy Indian potato pastries) and enjoyed music performances by local talent.

The CRY Southern California Chapter was started by two volunteers in 2004\. Today, the local chapter is rapidly expanding with more than 40 volunteers, a diverse group of working professionals and students who have come together for the cause of child rights. CRY SOCAL plans to organize various events throughout the year to raise awareness of the plight of underprivileged children, and to help raise funds to support child projects supported by CRY America.
