A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot a man who fired at deputies and a law enforcement helicopter from the roof of a house in a Los Angeles suburb early Monday, authorities said.

Deputies responded around 4 a.m. after residents reported a man who had climbed onto a rooftop in the Walnut Park area south of downtown Los Angeles, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

Deputies couldn’t locate the man. But an hour later, residents called 911 again, reporting gunshots on the same residential block.

When a sheriff’s department helicopter arrived, the man began shooting at the aircraft and at deputies on the ground, officials said. After a deputy shot the suspect at around 6 a.m., the gunman remained on the roof for at least another hour, the sheriff’s statement said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies were a short distance away behind an armored vehicle.

The man eventually surrendered and was transported to a hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the torso, the statement said. The suspect, described as a man in his 20s, wasn’t immediately identified.

No other injuries were reported. There was no information about a possible motive.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, sheriff’s officials said.
