In early 2005, local and state officials began their attempt to end violence in Santa Monica by holding a gang violence community workshop at John Adams Middle School in which hundreds of people attended.

A week later, two Santa Monica men were gunned down just a few hundred feet from where community members had gathered days before seeking a solution to the end the violence.

On March 5, Santa Monicans Jonathan Hernandez, 19, and Hector Bonilla, 25, were shot multiple times at the Moose Lodge at 1600 Ocean Park Blvd. while attending a birthday party. Between 50 and 75 witnesses were interviewed but local police had trouble investigating the murders because people were afraid to talk in fear of gang retaliation.

Then in July, police got a break in the case. The District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges and issued warrants against Jose Mojarro, 21, William Vasquez, 25, and Ector Hugo Sanchez, 20, for the murders. The three suspects are believed to be 18th Street gang members from Los Angeles, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. They face two counts of murder, with special allegations of gang enhancements and use of firearms during a gang crime, and a third count of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, the three men face life without parole or the death penalty.

Mojarro and Vasquez have been arrested. Sanchez is still at large.
