A driver struck a pedestrian who fell from the curb on Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica Saturday morning, police said.

The driver was traveling north on Lincoln when a pedestrian on the curb fell into the road and was struck near Ocean Park Boulevard at about 7:10 a.m. Saturday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. Captain Candice Cobarrubias said the pedestrian, a 35-year-old Asian man, sustained major head trauma and died while being transported to the hospital. The driver stopped and remained on-scene, she added.

"The investigation is still ongoing to see what would cause the pedestrian to go into the roadway," Cobarrubias said.

SMPD has not yet released the name of the victim.

Santa Monica launched a Vision Zero campaign in 2016 to try to eliminate traffic collision fatalities, joining cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. City spokesperson Constance Farrell said the Saturday death marks the first pedestrian fatality in 2020. Three pedestrians died on city streets in 2019, zero died in 2018 and nine died in 2017.
