It would seem Eddie Vedder has taken a page from the script of “Into the Wild,” venturing into uncharted territory. Sure, he’s done the solo thing in the past and has even dabbled in some pretty far-out genres, but this effort by the Pearl Jam frontman has an entirely different vibe than anything he’s done before.

Of course, it has undertones from his previous work, but there is a new sense of urgency with this collection that wasn’t there before. Gone are the esoteric references and overt aggressiveness that have been his hallmarks. Instead, Vedder takes on a more narrative style that lends itself to the soundtrack of this film. This is certainly a more folksy Vedder this time around.

In keeping with the film’s rustic nature, Vedder has stuck to classic styles rooted in Americana that help give the album a certain relevance that is both bold and appropriate for the subject matter. On “No Ceiling,” he wisely (and how often can this be said) chooses the banjo as his primary string accompaniment. Albeit a short track, it helps set the tone for this confident album.

“Far Behind” is reminiscent of Pearl Jam. It has a certain punk sensibility that only Vedder can pull off. It is one of the few up-tempo tracks on the album, but helps round out this excellent release.

The entire work is worth checking out even if you’re not a diehard Pearl Jam fan. Apparently, the movie isn’t so bad either, but that’s the subject for another column. (Monkey Wrench)
