Partying in Santa Monica has gone to the dogs. Guardians of small dogs and their four-legged wards are invited to the first-ever “Small Dog Park Party,” to be held April 25 from noon to 3 p.m. in the newly designated “small dog area” of Joslyn Park, located on Seventh Street between Strand and Kensington in Ocean Park. Admission is free.

Costumes (on the dogs) are optional — but strongly encouraged. There will be a lot of dog games, contests and prizes. Complimentary digital photos of the pups will be snapped, catching them in the act of whatever, and local canine mentalist “Madame Georja” will read paws. Santa Monica Mayor Pro Tem Kevin McKeown will make an appearance and will be presented with a “Champion of Dogs” award by grateful canines.

Entrance to the small dog area is at the southeast corner of the park. Once inside the fenced area, dogs may run off leash as long as their guardians keep a watchful eye. To assure an orderly event — no food, drink or dog treats are permitted inside the park. To attend, each dog must be licensed in Santa Monica.

The party is being hosted by an ad-hoc grass-roots group of small dog guardians in our community who are elated and thankful that the city of Santa Monica has designated this area for the enjoyment and protection of small dogs — under 25 pounds. This new fenced area is being provided by the city on a provisional basis. The party is being offered to promote the park’s enthusiastic and frequent use, as well as to give the guardians and their dogs an opportunity to “meet up” and have fun.
