The Santa Monica Fire Department invites the public to celebrate the reopening of Fire Station #2, which is located at 222 Hollister, just east of Main Street in Santa Monica. Two separate events will be held. There will be a dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. on Jan. 31, and an open house on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Station tours will be available during the festivities on Friday and Saturday. Both events will be held at Station 2, rain or shine, and the public is warmly welcomed.

Station 2 was originally built in 1952\. The building was deemed seismically unsafe following the Northridge earthquake in 1994, but remained in service for the next few years while plans for a new station were drawn up and approved. The station was closed down for rebuilding two years ago, and staff moved to other quarters. The station was almost completed in April 2002 when it suffered fire damage caused by spontaneous ignition of oily rags left at the construction site.

One engine company and one paramedic squad team will be stationed at the new facility. In addition to the fire engine and ambulance assigned to those firefighters, several other pieces of equipment will be stored at Station 2, including the Urban Search and Rescue truck, a reserve fire engine and a brand-new truck outfitted for fighting brush fires.
