The Santa Monica Fire Department is urging residents to learn about lithium-ion battery safety during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11, through community events and educational initiatives.
The department is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to promote this year's campaign, "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home," which emphasizes safe purchasing, charging and recycling practices for these ubiquitous power sources.
Lithium-ion batteries power most rechargeable electronics in homes today, including smartphones, tablets, power tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones and toys. While convenient and powerful, these batteries can overheat, cause fires or even explode if used incorrectly or damaged.
"Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they're just about everywhere," said Fire Marshal Joe Cavin. "This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent fires in the home and to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach."
The fire department recommends three key safety practices:
Buy only listed products. Research products before purchasing and look for stamps from nationally recognized testing labs on packaging, indicating compliance with safety standards. Many online and retail products may not meet safety requirements and could increase fire risk.
Charge devices safely. Use only manufacturer-provided charging cords and follow all instructions. Purchase replacement chargers from manufacturers or approved sources. Charge devices on hard surfaces, never under pillows, on beds or couches. Avoid overcharging by unplugging devices when fully charged.
Recycle batteries responsibly. Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in trash or regular recycling bins due to fire risk. Use designated battery recycling locations instead. Visit call2recycle.org to find nearby recycling spots.
The department will host several free community events:
Sunday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, fire department staff will provide information and giveaways at the Santa Monica Main Street Farmers Market.
Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fire Station 1 at 1337 7th Street will host an open house for all ages.
