The Santa Monica College theatre arts and music departments will present “Into the Woods,” the Tony Award-winning smash hit musical that turns popular fairy tales on their heads to deliver, ultimately, a moving lesson. The play will run from July 14-23.

It will be presented Fridays through Sundays. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m. and Sunday performances at 1 p.m. An additional matinee at 1 p.m. will be on Saturday, July 22\. Theatre arts professor Terrin Adair-Lynch directs.

“Into the Woods” will be presented in the Hangar Stage, located at SMC’s Airport Campus, 2800 Airport Ave. Parking is free.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine,“Woods”tells a fractured fairy tale about a baker and his wife who, cursed with childlessness, embark on a quest to break the spell. Along the way, they swindle, lie to and steal from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (of beanstalk fame). What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility.

The musical won three Tonys in 1987 — best score for Sondheim, best book for Lapine and best actress in a musical for Joanna Gleason.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call (310) 434-3000 and for information, go to http://www.smc.edu/theatre.
