Local college film students will be showing off their work this month. Santa Monica College presents its traditional end-of-semester screening of student films produced by members of the SMC Student Filmmakers Association. The “Evening of SMC Student Films,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 in room 214 of the art complex at SMC, located at 1900 Pico Blvd. The event is free, as is parking. Seating is limited and is available on a first-arrival basis. The club provides free pizza and refreshments at intermission.

With short films ranging across all genres, the festival of student work also showcases a diversity of filmmaking visions and voices representing SMC’s eclectic mix of national origins and ethnicities.

The SMC Student Filmmakers Association is one of the college’s most popular student organizations on campus, providing the opportunity to produce short films on a campus where there are no formal filmmaking classes available, school officials said. Films are made on low budgets and are financed completely by students. Most are shot digitally and edited on home computers. Many of the club members plan to transfer to major four-year film schools such as USC and UCLA and work professionally in the industry, according to school officials.

The event is sponsored by the SMC communications department in association with the Student Filmmakers Association.
