The premise of your lead story on Monday, June 6, was ridiculous — especially the headline (”Homeless liaison idea losing steam”), which, as you well know, is the only information some people will read. Councilmember Bobby Shriver’s proposal to hire a top-level manager to find more effective ways to move Santa Monica’s chronic homeless people off the streets is not losing steam.

Councilmember Richard Bloom has opposed it from the beginning. That is not surprising, since Bloom has spent two years attending meetings of Bring LA Home. This is the group of movers and shakers who, if they stick to their current schedule, will have taken two years and three months just to unveil a plan to deal with homelessness in LA County. God knows how long it would take to implement any part of that plan, if that would ever happen.

Councilmember Ken Genser, who was absent from the meeting when Shriver introduced his proposal, has now expressed general approval of the homeless liaison, but has asked some questions. That is not surprising, since it is an elected official’s responsibility to consider other options before committing public funds.

It is surprising that you would make such an extreme statement in a headline with no extreme facts in the story to back it up. Many people have expressed support for the homeless liaison in your own newspaper. Why didn’t you ask them if they no longer support the idea instead of simply dredging up comments that are either weeks old, equivocal or both?

Finally, Santa Monica has a councilmember willing to stand up and do something about the people living in our parks, streets and carports — and our daily paper undermines that effort by misleading their readers. What a shame.
