The corporatization of the video industry hits home with the closing of one of Santa Monica’s last “mom and pop” movie rental stores.

Galaxy Video at 2901 Ocean Park Blvd. is being forced out of the highly competitive video industry after nearly two decades of loyal service, company officials said.

The reasons for the closing are many, but can be summed up to include the proliferation of large corporate chains, piracy and illegal downloads, rising real estate costs and alternative methods of delivery of movies.

“The so-called ‘big box’ retailers such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City, along with monster chains Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, combined with online Netflix movie rental service have seized such a large and growing market share over movie rental and sales that it is virtually impossible for small independent retailers to compete,” said Shane Matheny of Liquid Systems, LLC. Matheny’s company was asked to handle the liquidation of Galaxy Video, which is presently selling its entire inventory and fixtures at reduced prices. Quit smoking, start shopping
