Jonathan Safran Foer, the award-winning author of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in the Santa Monica College Pavilion, located at 17th and Pearl streets in Santa Monica.

Admission and parking are free. Froer’s novel, written from the perspective of a young boy who loses his father in the 9/11 Twin Towers attack, has been chosen for the 2006 “Santa Monica Citywide Reads” program.

Citywide Reads encourages people who live or work in Santa Monica to read the same book, and the program also schedules forums for discussions at locations throughout the city. This year’s Citywide Reads program began on April 3 and ends May 6.

Foer’s earlier novel, “Everything is Illuminated,” was named Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and received the National Jewish Book Award, the New York Public Library Young Lions Prize and the Guardian First Book Prize. It was also made into a film starring Elijah Woods.

Foer’s talk at SMC is part of the college’s Literary Series and is cosponsored by the Santa Monica Public Library, the SMC English Department and the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and other special programs on campus. Voting opens for Twilight poster contest
