(Re: “Where there’s smoke, there’s ire,” Oct. 27-28, editorial) (The Daily Press’) concern for chronically ill patients looking to alleviate their suffering would be so touching if it didn’t reek to high heavens of being totally phony and self-serving. You would have us believe that the two-thirds of the voters who wanted the police to make marijuana the lowest priority are either chronically ill themselves, caretakers of the chronically ill (Why do the caretakers need marijuana?) or they are so compassionate and altruistic that the motivation for voting was wanting the chronically ill to have marijuana.

Right. Are you still selling the Brooklyn Bridge, or did you give up on that?

Could it possibly be that the marijuana smokers who are not ill wanted to smoke with impunity knowing the police were forced to make the apprehension and arrest of marijuana smokers the lowest priority? Could avoiding arrest possibly have been the motivation?

As (the paper) said, “In a nutshell, most of the council’s constituents and the PD’s charges don’t care if their neighbors toke away in their homes.” So where is the logical segue to medical marijuana? It is as logical as the statement, “Maybe (Mayor) Bloom would rather have someone get high and drive back home to Santa Monica.”

This assumes the medical marijuana purchaser, who is chronically ill from cancer or AIDS, is going to get high in Tarzana, then drive back to Santa Monica. Does anyone else see a flaw in this reasoning? (The editorial) neglected to mention that there are numerous locations within five miles of Santa Monica where medical marijuana can be purchased.
