Marty Verdugo, Samohi’s head girls’ basketball coach, has been nominated by the California Coaches Association as coach of the year, it was announced late last week.

Verdugo has led the Vikings to a 14-6 record this season a year after guiding Samohi to last year’s CIF-SS Division 1A championship, the first in the sport in school history.

The award goes to one coach from each sport from across the state.

“This is a real honor for me,” Verdugo said. “It’s nice to know that people take notice of what you do.”

His Vikings are currently ranked No. 7 in the latest CIF-SS Division 1AA poll.

Verdugo announced earlier this season that he is stepping down as coach at the end of the year. Verdugo was named Division 1 state coach of the year last season by Cal-Hi Sports and was named CIF-SS Division 1 coach of the year.
