Aspiring and struggling screenwriters should mark their calendars for a free writing lesson by someone who’s made it.

David Grae, writer and story editor on the Emmy-winning TV series “Joan of Arcadia,” will talk about writing for the small and big screens on Monday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. The lecture is the second in the “Mary Pickford Speakers Series,” which focuses on “the story” in all of its aspects.

Grae, who is in his second season with “Joan of Arcadia,” is a writer for stage, television and film productions. Among his other credits, he wrote the popular play “Moose Mating” and in 2001 directed its film version starring Aisha Tyler and Kevin Crowley.

The talk will be held at the Santa Monica College Academy of Entertainment & Technology in the screening room, 1660 Stewart St. Seating is on a first-arrival basis. Call (310) 434-3777 for more information.
