Winners of the Sustainable Student Art Sculpture Contest were declared Wednesday by the Resource Recovery & Recycling Division and the Office of Sustainability and the Environment.
The theme for the 2012 Art of Recycling Sustainable Student Sculpture Contest was “Zero Waste — Imagine a Waste Free Santa Monica.” For the contest, students in Santa Monica were encouraged to use recyclable or throw-away items in order to repurpose waste and create sculptures that fit the theme.
More than 200 students participated in the competition and crafted innovative sculptures that ranged from small cardboard beach houses to life-sized mannequins made from paper towel rolls and paper mache.
Staff and volunteers working with City Hall chose first, second and third place winners in four categories: kindergarten-second grade, third-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-12th grade. And a People’s Choice Award was decided by city employees during Public Works Week. The students’ efforts will be rewarded with green prizes, such as reusable bags and desktop worm composting containers.
The winners’ sculptures are being displayed in City Hall through June 20.
