The grounds crew and recycling team at Santa Monica College were named the winners of the school’s 2012 EcoHero Awards April 26.

Presented in the college’s Organic Learning Garden, the grounds crew and their supervisor, Tom Corpus, received the award for their work, which includes the incorporation of “Green Zones” on campus, where only manpowered or battery-powered equipment and organic integrated pest management is used.

The recycling program, headed by specialist Madeline Brodie and composed of student workers, was recognized for their efforts in starting the college’s Zero Waste program and maintaining the recycling system.

Lisa Lewis Burns, an administrative assistant in SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies, was also honored for her work with the Eco Club on campus.

“Sometimes it isn’t easy being green, but these guys do it every day,” said Genevieve Bertone, SMC sustainability director.
