“Bye Bye Birdie” is a musical with a plot that manages to make for good drama even though it doesn’t make much sense. It first appeared on Broadway in 1960, winning a Tony, received the Hollywood treatment in a predictably dampened 1963 film, and then spun in a thousand directions, appearing on high school theatre bills nation-wide. The subject matter of nosy parents, high-school sweethearts, and rock ‘n’ roll stars will tug at the hearts of teenagers and appeal to the more sentimental of their parents.

“Bye Bye Birdie” plays at the Santa Monica High School Theatre the next two Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 (student) and $15\. For more information, visit www.smclo.org.
