IT’S EARTH DAY THIS WEEKEND, A DAY TO CELEBRATE THE ABUNDANT NATURAL AND cultural resources in our community. You can dance to the rhythmic beats on the Santa Monica Pier’s celebration, bond with neighbors at the Virginia Avenue Park Unity Resource Fair, welcome Dolly back where she belongs at Santa Monica High School or salute the culture of 1980s punk at Track 16 Gallery. But no matter how you choose to spend this Earth Day weekend, it’s a great one for art and culture in Santa Monica!

Hello Dolly is truly one of the classic american musicals. It’s been performed in a multitude of languages on stages all over the world. This week-end and next, you ‘ll find it in the highly capable hands of Santa Monica High School’s theatre students who bring the dazzling characters originally created by Thornton Wilder to life once more. Whether you pick a Friday or a Saturday, you should definitely Put On Your Sunday Clothes and see this delightful production.

Learn more about the many social and academic resources available in our community against a musical background of soul, hip-hop, Latin, jazz, African and Native American. City Manager Lamont Ewell’s keynote comments will address how to create a culture of success for all our youth followed by a musical lineup that includes La Dee Dred, Horny Toad, and other hot young local performers such as Chili Con Carne. Don’t forget to bring your appetite so you can chow down on Cha Cha Chicken and Baby Blues Barbeque! Don’t miss this day of fascinating community dialogue and festive family activities!

Track 16 Gallery hits us with a double wha.m.my this weekend hosting opening receptions for two of the most imaginative and daring exhibitions you could ever find. In a partnership with The Godfrey Daniels School of Charm the gallery presents an act of rebellion — The Powder Room, referring both to a lady’s toilette and the place where folks used to store gunpowder. There’s no theme or thesis to the selected works, curators Georganne Deen and Christine Wertheim have simply assembled an exhibition focusing on unruly women (and a few men) of the art world.

Written, produced and directed by fellow Santa Monicans the first episode of this action/adventure theatrical series, Money, Take Run is a spoof of early 80s TV. If you’re guilty of ever watching Bosley and Angels Jill, Sabrina and Kelly back in the day, you’re sure to enjoy this spoof! Check it out!

Have a terrific weekend everyone! And don’t forget the Santa Monica Festival on Sunday, May 20! Happy Weekend — The Palette
