OCEAN PARK Santa Monica-based OPCC and Angel City Chorale have become partners in their common goal of community improvement.

Angel City Chorale will be donating half the proceeds of their new CD, “The Road Home,” to OPCC, the largest and most comprehensive provider of housing and services to low income and homeless individuals on the Westside.

“It’s been a great collaboration between the two organizations,” said John Maceri, executive director of OPCC.“When you hear the music, it really resonates with the importance of home and what home means to people. The partnership just made perfect sense.”

Founded in 1993 by Sue Fink, who now serves as the artistic director of the choir, Angel City Chorale has grown to over 125 singers who present a broad and eclectic repertoire of music.

The non-denominational group has performed at venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Kodak Theater, appeared on national television, and worked with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Luther Vandross. They also took part in the first ever Pangea Day, singing Mexico’s national anthem.

“Joining together with OPCC creates a natural partnership for Angel City Chorale because our goal is to build community one song at a time,” Fink said. “By participating in this alliance, we reinforce our commitment to making a difference in the communities surrounding us.”

Some members of the choir are volunteers and employees of OPCC as well.

“We came together to build a sense of community,” said Steve Deitelbaum, a 10 year member of the Angel City Chorale and director of Campion Medical Health Center at OPCC. “We bring our music to help people.”

The partnership between the two organizations began when a producer of Angel City Chorale suggested to Fink that they initiate a project to benefit the homeless.

Deborah Bogen, an OPCC donor and member of the Angel City Chorale suggested that the choir partner with OPCC because she knew that helping homeless people was the main thrust of the organization.

“I thought it would be best to partner with a group that was really close to home,” Bogen said.

The members of Angel City Chorale all got involved in the benefit project. Even the songs for the album were democratically selected, Bogen said.

The CD, which has an eclectic selection of songs ranging from classical, pop and jazz to spiritual, gospel and R&B, earned its title, “The Road Home,” because it spoke to both organizations.

“The concept is all about the issue of home. The whole idea of finding a home really resonated with the members of the choir,”said McKinley Williams, development director at OPCC.

The CD will be released during Angel City Chorale’s Spring Concert Series, with a special concert on Sunday, June 15, at Brentwood Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased on-line at www.angelcitychorale.com.
