The public will soon have the opportunity to comment on the use of police grant funding. There will be a public comment period for proposed uses of City Hall’s application the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) from the U.S. Department of Justice from Feb. 3 through noon on March 1\. The grants are expected to total $41,235.

In 2005, City Hall used its JAG allocation to fund the Santa Monica police “DNA and Advanced Forensic Evidence Testing” program, which allows the SMPD to submit biological and fiber evidence to certified forensic labs for testing and analysis.

City Hall proposes to use its 2006 JAG grant allocation to continue funding the same DNA program for an additional year.

The draft grant application is available for public review and written comment at the records and elections office in City Hall at 1685 Main St. and at the SMPD public safety building at 333 Olympic Drive.

It’s also available on the SMPD Web site at http://www.santamonicapd.org/.

Written comments regarding the proposed JAG grant application must be received by mail, fax, or e-mail no later than 5 p.m. on March 1.

Send by mail to Santa Monica Police Department Planning & Research Unit, room 354, 333 Olympic Drive, Santa Monica, CA., 90401.

Send by fax to Laura at SMPD Planning & Research Unit, (310) 260-2867.
