JAMS After three years of planning its formation and construction, officials from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District are making the dream of a joint-use childcare facility here a reality.

The 5,500-square-foot project at John Adams Middle School is being made possible, in part, thanks to funds made available by the state earlier this week. The district will contribute $300,000, and the Boys & Girls Club, $1.5 million. The total cost of the project is estimated to total $2.8 million.

“Part of the vision of this facility is that it will house the most up-to-date technology as possible, and be compatible with what JAMS students use on campus. This will be a place where kids can come and go after school to do homework and such things,” Jan Maez, the school district’s chief financial officer, said. “But our primary focus right now is getting construction started.”

Maez said that the district is anticipating at least a nine-month construction schedule, and is hoping to begin the project by Aug. 1.

“During the construction period, the school and the Boys & Girls Club will work on defining what the program looks like,”she added.

The funds released by Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell were part of a $234 million allotment earmarked for the construction, modernization and repair of school facilities around the state. Of those funds, $21 million was designated specifically for joint-use projects.

"Even though our student population is leveling off, the need for new and improved schools remains great because of the age of our facilities," O'Connell said.

The move marks a distinct new direction for joint-use facilities within the school district.

“We’ve partnered with SMMUSD since the early 1990’s and occupied classrooms,” Julie Reipen, director of development of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica, said. “This is the first time where we’ve gotten an actual, stand alone, Boys & Girls Club facility being constructed on the campus. And though the focus will be on middle school age youth, we’re going to serve any child that shows up on our doorstep.”
