Joel de Baldomore Carrillo, a longtime Santa Monica resident who had risen through the ranks of the aircraft industry, died on July 6\. He was 88.

Carrillo, who was born Feb. 27, 1917 in Mexico to Maximiliano and Julia Preciado Carrillo, died in Palo Alto, Calif., from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Carrillo was raised on Marine Street in Ocean Park and attended John Muir Elementary, John Adams Jr. High — where he was student body president — and Santa Monica High School. Carrillo also attended Santa Monica College.

During his high school years, Carrillo played saxophone and clarinet in a local dance band called The ‘Round Towners. He had a lifelong love of music from opera to Dixieland jazz.

During the Great Depression when jobs were difficult to come by, Carillo, who was working part-time for Western Union after school, had the idea of writing a telegram to the hiring manager at Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica. In the telegram, he listed the reasons why he should be hired. He insisted on personally delivering it.

The manager was so impressed with Carrillo’s initiative that he hired him on the spot. He was put to work sweeping floors, but he worked and studied his way to the eventual position of aircraft engineer. During WWII, Douglas sent him and his young family to South America to work with Aerolineas Argentinas. After 14 years with Douglas, he accepted an executive position with Philippine Airlines.

Carrillo left the aircraft industry after 21 years and built a second successful career in real estate investments in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Carrillo is survived by his former wife Verna Smith Carrillo; children Carol, Denys and her husband Joe Finn; Kimberly and her husband Larry Rolla; and Joe Jr. and his partner Suzy Seebold; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchil-dren; numerous nieces and nephews, and his loving and dedicated caregivers, Maru and Luis.

Carrillo’s family is deeply grateful to him and will miss his unique humor, his loving care, and his generous and good-natured spirit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Oct. 8, 2005 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. His ashes will be buried at his parents’ gravesite.
