Jude Law acquits himself quite smoothly as the incorrigible bachelor Alfie Elkins, reprising the role that made Michael Caine a star back in 1966\. Society’s sexual mores have changed quite a bit since then (though, in America, it appears they’re changing back) and so, too, has the timbre of “Alfie.” Where the original film was somewhat sensational and ultimately a sober-minded study of the pitfalls of serial seduction, this revisiting is much lighter in tone, decidedly more farcical. Alfie, circa ’66, was a cad; the new model is metrosexual to the max. Law’s a movie star who’s awfully easy on the eyes and boundlessly talented. As a British limo driver in Manhattan who routinely extends full service to his wealthy female clientele, Law glides through this one with impressive ease and prepossessing charm. Along the way, he’s escorted by a bevy of “birds” that includes Marisa Tomei as Alfie’s “semi-permanent-quasi-sort-of-girlfriend,” Susan Sarandon as the sexy older siren who beats him at his own game, Jane Krakowski’s frustrated housewife, Sienna Miller as a beautiful but damaged “statue,” and the eminently watchable Nia Long as his best bud’s girl — the woman who ultimately forces Alfie to endure a painful reckoning. Mick Jagger and the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart contribute three fantastic original songs to the soundtrack, complimenting a delightful retro-hip score by composer John Powell. Charles Shyer (“Baby Boom,” “Father of the Bride”) directs. (Rated R for sexual content, some language and drug use. Running time: 103 minutes)
