Most of us want to live a more fulfilling existence, a life free of imagined limitations. But what really prevents us from fully reaching our goals? Why do we, even when we know what we need to do to change our lives, hold on to self-destructive patterns and behaviors? Later this month, a workshop explores those questions, and offers a method for making changes in our lives.

Psychological defenses developed early in life are helpful at the time, but later act as barriers to significant change. The speakers will discuss the development of such defenses, show how they interfere in personal development, and describe how we can overcome the barriers. Real-life examples will demonstrate principles that can help participants overcome imagined limitations and create a life of meaning and compassion.

Topics of the meeting include: ■Dimensions of an undefended life versus a defended life. ■The value of experiencing the true emotional reaction to the joy and pain of life versus the deadening of painful feelings with addictive behaviors. ■The value of generosity versus withholding. ■The difference between coping effectively with anger versus the adoption of a victimized posture. ■The therapeutic value of genuine friendship, and the contrast of genuine friendship with fantasy relationships. ■The challenge of living a meaningful life in the face of existential realities. ■Learning to combine emotional and sexual intimacy. The workshop will be held on Feb. 7, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UCLA Extension in Westwood Village. Dr. Daniel Siegel, author of “The Developing Mind” & “Parenting From The Inside Out,” will be the facilitator at the workshop.
