Letter: More action needed on climate change

Our mayor is at the United Nations Climate Change conference in Paris to announce our city's move to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. I applaud our city council for adopting this goal. At the same time, however, I would like to point out that San Diego's council has approved a climate action plan that takes their city to 100 percent renewable power by 2035.

Santa Monica has consistently earned the reputation as a leader in environmental protection. Shouldn't our city council be considering as aggressive a goal as our neighbor to the south serving a population 15 times the size of Santa Monica?

We have all heard that the cumulative effect of the emissions reduction being pledged in Paris this week still falls short of what's necessary to halt the trajectory of climate change. Additional bold steps will be necessary to insure that our children and grandchildren are able to have the same quality of life we enjoy.
