The Santa Monica Public Library will host a free yarn-spinning workshop on Saturday, July 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Montana Avenue Branch.

Volunteers from the Greater Los Angeles Spinning Guild will teach participants how to create hand-spun yarn using traditional spindles and wool. Instructors will also demonstrate yarn-making techniques on spinning wheels.

The drop-in event welcomes attendees at any time during the three-hour session. Participants can receive hands-on spinning lessons or observe the meditative process. Space and supplies are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Greater Los Angeles Spinning Guild consists of hand-spinning enthusiasts from Los Angeles and Orange County who incorporate their craft into various fiber arts including knitting, weaving, rug-making, felting and crochet.

The Montana Avenue Branch is located at 1704 Montana Ave. The library is wheelchair accessible and welcomes people of all abilities. Those requiring special accommodations should call Library Administration at 310-458-8600 at least one week before the event.

The library encourages sustainable transportation options. Secure bike parking is available for cyclists, and Big Blue Bus riders can plan their trip at bigbluebus.com.
