It is a time for new beginnings. Schools will be starting soon, promising a fresh start and a year of growth, and the Santa Monica Pacific Palisades Lions Club is also beginning a new year under the leadership of our newly installed President, Carol Ann Emmitt. As one of the first two female members of the Santa Monica club, Carol Ann has served as president multiple times and is a Past District Governor of Lions District 4-L3, which serves the Los Angeles area.

Our SMPP Lions Installation was held this month at the Del Rey Yacht Club, where District Governor Frances Lee installed our new slate of officers. President Carol Ann then had the pleasure of installing our first new member of the year, Capt. Ken Cleveland of the Santa Monica Salvation Army.

The evening also gave us an opportunity to recognize our two longest-serving Lions, Arne Levee and Kingsley Fife. Both physicians, they joined the club within a couple of months of each other and quickly became good friends. Sadly, Arne passed away earlier this year, so his wife, Linda, stood in for him during the recognition. Kingsley, meanwhile, has never slowed down. He continues to serve as our membership chair and keeps club members informed about meetings, service activities and member milestones.

With school starting again, our first service project of the new Lions year will be August 11 at Santa Monica Memorial Park, where we will participate in the annual PAL Back-to-School event. Led by our service chair, Brian Ransom, Lions will once again be handing out keychains, stickers and other fun items, along with Target gift cards, to help local students get their school year off to a good start.

Increasing our service in the community is a big part of President Carol Ann’s plan for the coming year. At our first meeting in our new location, the Hyatt Centric Delfina Santa Monica, on September 2, Brian will be collecting shopping bags that members have filled with food for the Westside Food Bank. We originally began this project during the holiday season, but we have come to recognize that the need for food assistance continues throughout the year, especially as families face higher costs and continued economic uncertainty.

If you would like to contribute food for the Westside Food Bank, learn more about our plans for the year ahead, or simply find out what being a Lion is all about, please consider joining us as our guest on September 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Centric Delfina Santa Monica, 530 Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica. Valet parking is available. To RSVP, please contact Kingsley at 310-454-2960 or [smpplionsclub@gmail.com](mailto:smpplionsclub@gmail.com).
