SANTA MONICA BLVD — A renowned Santa Monica chef was sued by a contractor for allegedly failing to pay more than $120,000 for improvements at his new restaurant on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Sarlan Builders Inc. filed the breach-of-contract lawsuit Monday against Andrew Kirschner, owner of the Tar & Roses restaurant, claiming the chef owes at least $122,355 for work done at the eatery at 602 Santa Monica Blvd.

According to the lawsuit, Sarlan Builders entered a verbal contract with Kirschner last April to make improvements at Tar & Roses, but he did not pay the full balance even though the contractor performed all the work it was required to do.

Tar & Roses denies any knowledge of the lawsuit, stating it has not “seen a formal complaint,” nor does the eatery “have any notice or knowledge of a pending lawsuit,” according to a statement released by the restaurant.

The restaurant is currently in dispute with Sarlan Builders over their “delayed, and incomplete work” and will file its own claims against the company.

Kirschner, a former contestant on “Iron Chef,” was a longtime executive chef at the Wilshire restaurant in Santa Monica before opening Tar & Roses late last year. The restaurant incorporates reclaimed materials, polished concrete floors, exposed brick, and Carrera marble/wood tabletops. The menu is described as modern and rustic.
