The Lois Lambert Gallery, Gallery of Functional Art and Our Gallery Store will close its doors on September 30, 2025, after nearly four decades serving Santa Monica's arts community.

Founded in 1987, the gallery has provided a platform for mid-career and emerging artists while serving as a gathering place for art enthusiasts. The closure comes due to rising rents and a downturn in the art market, according to founder and director Lois Lambert.

"For 39 years, this gallery has been my life's work," Lambert said. "We've had the privilege of presenting extraordinary artists, welcoming curious visitors, and creating a space where conversations about art and life could flourish. Closing is bittersweet, but it has become impossible to continue because of rising rents and the downturn in the art market."

During its nearly four-decade run, the gallery hosted more than 175 exhibitions and championed both local and international artists. The space also partnered with schools and nonprofits to bring art to broader audiences and became known for fostering dialogue about pressing social issues while mentoring countless young artists.

The gallery's impact extended beyond exhibitions, establishing itself as a vital part of Santa Monica's cultural landscape and arts community.

While the physical gallery space will close, Lambert indicated the gallery's influence will persist through its community of artists and supporters, as well as through upcoming pop-up sites.

"We are deeply grateful to the artists, collectors, and friends who have walked this journey with us," Lambert said.

The gallery's closure marks the end of an era for Santa Monica's arts scene, representing one of the longest-running independent galleries in the area.
