The City of Malibu Arts Commission will host a free opening reception for "Heading Home," an exhibition of original paintings by local artist Gay Summer Rick, on Sunday, March 22, at noon.
Rick is a Malibu-based contemporary painter known for atmospheric urban and coastal landscapes that blend impressionism, abstract colorfield and expressive abstraction. Her work reveals unexpected beauty in everyday environments, capturing scenes bathed in luminous light and layered color applied with palette knives to create dreamlike yet familiar imagery.
"Malibu-based Gay Summer Rick sees the special beauty of the coastal village we call Malibu, and she shares her vision of that beauty for all to see," Mayor Bruce Silverstein said. "We have the honor and the privilege of displaying Gay Summer Rick's work at the Malibu City Gallery, where members of our community and the broader public who visit the Gallery can be inspired by Gay Summer Rick's unique portrayal of the beauty of Malibu and other areas along the California coast."
Rick studied art from a young age and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the New York State College of Ceramics. She has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally. More information about the artist is available at gaysummerrick.com.
The exhibition, curated by the Malibu Arts Commission, will be on display from March 23 through May 1.
The Malibu City Gallery is located on the first floor of Malibu City Hall, 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and no RSVP is required. Guests at the opening reception will enjoy complimentary light refreshments and live music.
