After receiving a free absence slip for the past two days, most of the students from the city’s public schools will return to class today, while a beaten up Webster Elementary School will remain closed through the week.

Officials with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District decided on Tuesday afternoon that Malibu High School, Juan Cabrillo Elementary School and Point Dume Marine Science School are clear to resume session today because they are all located a safe distance from the canyon fire that has damaged or destroyed more than 15 homes and caused thousands of residents to evacuate.

Webster Elementary School, located half a mile south from the Presbyterian church that was destroyed in the blaze, will remain closed through Friday while inspectors determine whether several of the buildings will be structurally safe for instruction and clean up some of the damage.

Several of the buildings on campus have suffered smoke, water and fire damage, said Tim Walker, the district’s deputy superintendent.

“The work involved in addressing it will take at least until Friday,” Walker said. “We will be reevaluating the ability to open on Monday by the end of the weekend.”
