A man was assaulted early Monday morning while sleeping in an alley in Mid-City Santa Monica, police said.

Santa Monica Police Department officers responded to reports of a person down on 12th Court between Colorado Avenue and Broadway around 6 a.m., said Lt. Joseph Cortez. Officers found a man in his 60s who had suffered blunt force trauma to his head. The man told officers he had been sleeping under a blanket when he was assaulted during the night, Cortez said.

The Santa Monica Fire Department transported the man to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

Cortez said the man provide officers with a detailed description of the suspect. Officers searched the area and found the suspect near 12th Street and Wilshire Boulevard.

Kevin Fremlin was arrested Monday for attempted murder and is being held on $1,050,000 bail.
