PALISADES PARK — A man Thursday jumped off the Palisades bluffs in a suicide attempt, forcing police to close a portion of Pacific Coast Highway so they could rescue him, authorities said.

Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said the unidentified man survived the fall but was in serious condition at a local hospital.

The call came in around 3:30 p.m., Lewis said. A witness told officers that the man climbed over a railing on the 800 block of Palisades Park and jumped.

The man was found approximately 40 feet above PCH in the bluffs. Fire fighters were called to collect him.

Traffic on PCH was backed up as a result, Lewis said.
