Residents are being asked to support the underdog this weekend. Walk for the Underdog, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, is holding its first annual walk this weekend. Walk for the Underdog will raise funds to help a number of foundations get more dogs out of shelters and to find them permanent homes. Those who want to rescue a dog from a shelter need $75 — and they get to help man’s best friend.

Walk for the Underdog is organized like an AIDS Walk: Walkers get sponsors to raise money. But this is not only a walk — it’s a huge dog party complete with live music, celebrities, staged events, prizes, a silent auction and dogs of every spot and stripe up for adoption, organizers say.

Vendors will display their wares and offer their services such as acupuncture, non-medical healing arts and an “Ask the Vet” booth where questions about canine companions will be answered.

The walkers will include rescue groups who will be walking with dogs available for adoption. Among these rescues, Walk for the Underdog is sponsoring: The Bill Foundation, The Amanda Foundation, Marley’s Pit Stop, Ace of Hearts, Boxer Rescue LA, Southern California Siberian Husky Rescue and Forte Animal Rescue.

People who want to join the party can register online for the walk — come with or without your dog. Dog walkers will meet on the Santa Monica Pier parking lot alongside the PCH. Then they will go up the stairs and into Palisades Park where the walk will take place.

LA is a dog town, but 700 dogs are euthanized every week. Walk for the Underdog calls on everyone to come and help make a difference to the homeless dogs of LA.

This event will take place on Sunday, May 15\. Registration opens at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m. Contact Helena Kriel at (310) 455-7030 or Rene Breier at (858) 452-1179 for more information. Visit www.walkfortheunderdog.com for details about the event. Publicist educates SMC students
