I was beyond disgusted reading Kevin McKeown’s opinion letter about Mayor Lana Negrete. At first, I didn’t think it should have been printed, but now I’m actually glad it was because it reveals just how misogynistic and condescending his remarks were. It’s clear he’s aligned with the current City Council, which, in all my years of living in Santa Monica, is the worst we’ve ever had.
Would he have used the term “hissy fit” if one of the men on the council were standing up for what they believed was right? Would he have questioned their education or credibility in the same way? I doubt it.
Let’s not forget: Mr. McKeown resigned from his own council seat in the middle of a meeting and played a role in the decline of downtown Santa Monica. He seems completely unaware that residents are now calling for a recall of this current council after realizing they were misled by campaign promises and hidden agendas.
Mayor Negrete, on the other hand, has shown more integrity than any man or woman who has served on that council. She’s unafraid to speak her mind, to stand by her convictions even when it’s not the popular stance and she’s earned the respect and admiration of residents at neighborhood meetings throughout the city.
We, the citizens of Santa Monica, stand firmly behind Mayor Negrete and are deeply saddened to see her Mayorship coming to an end to a council that appears beholden to developers and out of touch with what residents truly want and a MAYOR who is never out in the community.
