The Morgan-Wixson Theatre's YES program will present "The Drowsy Chaperone," the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, from November 8 through December 7, closing the program's 20th season.
The production features music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, with book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Eve Keller directs, with producers Cori Goldberg, Karin Klein and Kasi Peters. Sarah Marie provides music direction and Ashley Douglas choreographs.
This witty parody of 1920s musical comedies is a show-within-a-show that celebrates theater's joy while poking fun at its clichés. The story begins when a die-hard musical theater fan known as "Man in Chair" plays his favorite cast album, bringing the fictional 1928 musical to life in his apartment.
The elaborate tale follows a Broadway starlet giving up stage life to marry her true love, while her desperate producer tries to stop the wedding. Characters include gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a Latin lover and a drunken chaperone.
The production features a 21-member all-youth cast ranging in age from 14 to 18. Cast members include Henry Anderson, Finnley Blaine, Jacob Carlin, Cat Casas, Maia Goldberg, London Hartmann, Joaquin Hosfeld, Cole Huang, Rahland Keller, Chase Klein, Molly Levitt, Lily Moss, Mia Negrete, Amelia Olson, Shai Painter, Felicity Peters, Catalina Ramirez, Harper Sawicki, Evan Simonowitz, Anna Stillman and Aydin Washington.
Performances run Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. with select Friday and Saturday shows at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, and $16 for children 12 and under.
