A musical comedy celebrating the life and work of beloved Yiddish storyteller Sholom Aleichem will return to Santa Monica Playhouse this August and September for its sixth year.

"Aleichem Sholom! The Wit and Wisdom of Sholom Aleichem" follows the life of the influential writer as he shares tales of love, loss, fame and failure. The production explores the controversy surrounding his stories and plays while highlighting his quest to celebrate common humanity.

The musical features veteran performer Chris DeCarlo reprising his role as Sholom Aleichem, a characterization that has been seen by more than 250,000 audience members. Evelyn Rudie joins him, portraying more than three dozen characters created by the author across over 2,000 performances.

The production is written by Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie, with music by Emery Bernauer, E. Rudie and Sholom Aleichem. The show played to sold-out audiences until theater closures began in 2020 and returns by popular demand.

"Brilliant performances!" praised The Tolucan Times, while broadwayworld.com called them "brilliant portrayals."

The musical is part of Santa Monica Playhouse's Jewish Heritage Project, which supports productions preserving Jewish theater traditions and introducing new generations to Jewish cultural heritage.

Santa Monica Playhouse receives support from the We Are Santa Monica Fund, the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, and Playhouse PALS.

Performances are scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 10 at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Santa Monica Playhouse – The Other Space, 1211 4th Street.
