Though it was the final edition of Locals’ Night on the Santa Monica Pier until September, the evening packed in enough activities to fill residents with Santa Monica spirit through the summer.

The day began with the Rick Crocker 5K Challenge, an annual run benefiting the Santa Monica Police Activities League dedicated to the memory of Officer Rick Crocker, a member of the Santa Monica Police Department who lost his life while serving in Iraq in 2005.

After the 5K, the Pier stage played host to the “New Heroes” commendation ceremony, with Police Chief Ramon Batista, Fire Department Chief Matthew Hallock and Mayor Phil Brock welcoming new hires to both the Police and Fire Departments.

The typical Locals’ Night fare of a classic car show and musical performances was augmented by a special showcase of the John Adams Middle School-Santa Monica Alternative School House musical theater company, who shined on the west end of the Pier with selections from Mean Girls Jr. Below the Pier, Olympic volleyball player Sinjin Smith led a teaching session in the sport.
