*LETTERS TO THE EDITOR*

*By Marty Liboff Santa Monica*

The plans for Santa Monica Place to extend into Main Street must not have come from anyone who lives near Main Street.

Main Street used to have real shops that catered to the neighbors. There were several markets, old-fashioned barber shops, a TV repair, a butcher, a baker, a 5-and- 10 and a hardware store. Now it’s all eclectic junk, expensive restaurants, bars and nail salons for tourists and people driving in from Beverly Hills.

This has severely impacted the quality of life for residents. The homeless have followed the tourist hand-outs, and the surrounding streets have become filthy and have homeless people sleeping there all the time. The tourists are not much better as far as dumping their Starbucks cups and beer bottles from the bars and wandering around loud and drunk on the weekends. The traffic is already a mess, and cars LETTERS, from page 6 speed on the residential streets to avoid Main Street. Parking is a constant battle.

Turning our Main Street into Disneyland Main Street is a great idea for tourist business, but not for us tenants who live here.
