# Nüart Gallery opens William T. Carson's 'Time Out of Time' on Sept. 12

Nüart Gallery will present "Time Out of Time," a solo exhibition by artist William T. Carson, opening Saturday, Sept. 12, with an artist reception and talk from 3 to 5 p.m. The show runs through Oct. 3 at the gallery's Bergamot Station location.

The work grew out of Carson's fascination with time — the collision of human time and deep time, measured and immeasurable, abstract and felt. Coal has been his primary medium for more than a decade. He is drawn to the material for the way it sets a single life against geologic timescales. To hold a piece of coal, he says, is to hold ancient sunlight: plants that absorbed light in Montana 60 million years ago before being buried, compressed and transformed.

In the series "Second Nature" and "O'Clock," compositions inspired by clock faces emerge from fragments of mica catching light against deep shadows of coal. The pairing highlights a paradox: an hour set against 60 million years feels like a grain of sand, yet those millions of years accumulate only one moment at a time.

The exhibition's centerpiece is a clepsydra, an ancient water-clock form whose name comes from the Greek for "water thief." In Carson's installation, water drips onto boulders of coal, marking passing time while producing a faint crackling sound.

Carson traces his interest to his years as program manager at the Holt/Smithson Foundation from 2019 to 2025, where he worked with the legacies of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson. He also credits growing up on a cattle ranch in rural Montana, surrounded by coal mines.

Carson studied architecture at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen and graduated with distinction in art studio from Colorado College in 2015\. He was an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in 2025 and is represented by Nüart Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The exhibition is on view Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Nüart Gallery, Bergamot Station Arts Center, 2525 Michigan Ave., Suite B4.
