Residents can channel their inner Jimi and Janis this weekend along Main Street, when the annual Summer SOULstice serves up a musical tribute to the “The Summer of Love.” Flowers in your hair are optional.

Marking the 40th anniversary of the now-legendary Monterey Pop Festival, the 7th Annual Main Street Summer SOULstice — sponsored by the Main Street Business Improvement Association (MSBIA) — arrives on Sunday with a lineup of ’60s tribute bands, food and games to entertain the swaying masses.

Following the day’s events, the rockumentary “The Complete Monterey Pop Festival” will be shown on the Enterprise Fish Company Patio (174 Kinney St.) at 9 p.m.

The free party gets started at 11 a.m. and runs until 7 p.m. on Main Street, between Pico Street and Marine Street. On tap are live music, a scavenger hunt with dozens of prizes, a Summer of Love costume contest, pony rides, a petting farm and a sidewalk sale.

In addition, several Main Street merchants are plan-ning in-store parties on Saturday, offering items at discounted prices during a collective sidewalk sale.

Established in 2000, the SOULstice is the brainchild of MSBIA board members Emily Kroll, Joe Pipersky, Joel Mikkalson and Gary Gordon. Over the years, the founders have focused on providing a free event that spotlights the individual businesses that characterize Main Street and attracts the community to it.

“We no longer get calls with people asking ‘Is the celebration going to happen?’” Gordon said Thursday.

With good turnouts each of the past six years, an emboldened association has added a number of new attractions to this year’s event. MCs will look to entertain the crowds during music breaks, many of them being local comedians. Also, costume contests will be staged throughout the day, with a final competition in the evening. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1960s attire, resembling such icons as Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix.

PSYCHEDELIC TUNES “We’ve got some new bands that we think people will really enjoy,”said Gary Gordon.“For people who like music, they’ll get what they’ve enjoyed before, plus some new sounds.”

Beginning at noon, more than a dozen bands will take to at least five different stages. This year’s acts will be playing later into the evening than in years past, with the music expected to wrap up before 8 p.m.

Due to the enthusiastic reaction to the tribute bands appearing over the last four years — Peace Frog (a Doors tribute band), The Neil Deal (Neil Young), The Rolling Clones (The Rolling Stones), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob Dylan) and Number Nine (The Beatles) — each will be back, along with RAM (a Paul McCartney/Wings/Beatles tribute band), Heartless (a late ’60’s band) and The Canalligators (a late ’60s band and Venice favorite).

As part of the anniversary of the seminal Monterey Pop Festival, the band Summer of Love will play, presenting the music of Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, the Mamas and Papas, and more. Also appearing for the first time this year, Stone Soul, a five-piece band presenting the famous dance-oriented soul music of the ’60s. (A complete schedule for the music is available at www.mainstreetsm.com/soulstice.html) MAIN STREET TREASURE The popular Scavenger Hunt, staged in each of the last four years, is quickly becoming a SOULstice staple. As in the past, Sunday’s hunt will be an opportunity for participants to win big prizes. The grand prize is a new bicycle from Bike Attack. Other contestants have a shot at more than 80 other prizes, some worth up to $200 or more from Main Street businesses.

Scavenger Hunt clue sheets will be available at the MSBIA table at the Sunday Main Street Farmers’ Market, and at the SOULstice information table at the First Federal Lot (between Ashland Street & Hill Street).

Other activities for the kids include pony rides, a petting zoo, face-painting, balloon twisting with Rockie the Clown, and magic tricks with Jersey Jim, a comedic magician.

Big Blue Bus will be running a special free shuttle back and forth between the new Civic Center garage and Main Street during the event. Parking is also available at the beach lots for $6/day and in Main Street lots. Check www.mainstreetsm.com for up-to-date information.
