It’s time to clean up Main Street. The Main Street Merchants Association is sponsoring its fourth community clean-up event, which is scheduled to take place this Saturday and will focus on the Ocean Park neighborhood. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Ocean Park Library located on Main Street at 8.30 a.m. for registration. In an effort to beautify the neighborhood and business district, while at the same time improving community relations, volunteers will collect trash and recyclables. The city of Santa Monica will provide all support service for the cleanup.

While pollution prevention is the main goal of the event, there are many advantages to cleaning up the neighborhood, area merchants say. Not only does it improve relations between a thriving business community and its residents, it’s also good for merchants.

“As a business owner, I feel it is important to take responsibility for the trash being generated as a result of the public visiting Main Street,” said Dave Lackman, owner of the Library Alehouse and chairman of the Main Street Merchants Association. “By maintaining a clean street, we create a friendlier and healthier environment for people to shop, eat and visit with their neighbors.”

Lackman is just one of many business owners who are starting to realize the connection between a healthy environment and a healthy bottom line.

Volunteers will be rewarded with “$15 Library Alehouse Dollars,” in addition to other gifts, and there will be a raffle for larger prizes, too.
