Strolling through Main Street’s farmers’ market on a Sunday morning, dessert-tasting at UCLA, or seated in the historic, newly refurbished Barnum Hall, locals this spring are getting an unprecedented number of opportunities to enjoy the award-winning music of the Santa Monica High School orchestra.

They’ll get one more chance today. The singers will perform at the Samohi Orchestra Spring Concert in Barnum Hall on the Santa Monica campus at 7 p.m.

Between now and April, the community can hear a variety of performances by the young musicians as they gear up for their international debut concerts in Vienna and Prague.

As part of a world-wide Dvorak festival, the highly-regarded high school Symphony Orchestra has been invited to play in Prague at the beginning of next month.

In an effort to promote Santa Monica’s music program and raise funds for the trip, Symphony Orchestra musicians have played a wide range of local venues.

In February, the orchestra hosted a fundraising event for the Prague trip at the UCLA faculty club, where guests were entertained by chamber music, jazz vocals, a brass ensemble, harp and piano soloists and an African rhythm band.

On March 10, the Samohi Chamber Orchestra and Winds accompanied the choir in a choral masterworks concert at Barnum Hall.

The orchestra headlined the Santa Monica school community’s traditionally sold-out Stairway to the Stars concert March 18 and 19 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Following tonight’s concert, the spring season will climax with the Prague “send-off” concert at Barnum on April 2 at 7 p.m. At that event, the Symphony Orchestra will premier the program they will be playing on their European tour. The spring season’s final performances will feature selections from the Shostakovich Symphony 5, Rimsky-Korsakoff-Scheherazade, the Beethoven Egmont Overture, Dvorak Symphony 8, and Gershwin’s celebrated Porgy and Bess.

The community is invited to preview the challenging and delightful program these stellar musicians will take on their European tour. Tickets for the Barnum concerts are $5\. They can be purchased at the door.
