Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier will celebrate National Roller Coaster Day with $1 rides on its West Coaster on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Visitors can get the special barcode by following @pacpark on Instagram and watching for Thursday's post to unlock the promotional deal. The offer provides an opportunity to experience the steel roller coaster's double-helix design and ocean views at a reduced price.
The West Coaster races 55 feet above the Santa Monica Pier deck and 95 feet over the Pacific Ocean, reaching speeds of 35 mph while offering views of the Southern California coastline. The ride runs from one end of Pacific Park to the other.
National Roller Coaster Day is celebrated annually on Aug. 16, commemorating one of the first roller coaster patents granted to Edwin Prescott in 1898 for a looping coaster. The day celebrates roller coasters and encourages people to visit amusement parks to experience the thrill of these rides.
LaMarcus Thompson is widely credited as the "father of the roller coaster" for developing the "Switchback Railway" at Coney Island in 1884.
Pacific Park, located at 380 Santa Monica Pier, is Los Angeles' only admission-free amusement park. The facility features 12 amusement rides, 14 midway games, Snackville with five food offerings and seaside retail shopping.
